Is Your Head in the Right Game?

In a conversation with my husband last week, he was telling me about things going on at his work. I find it interesting that the issues existing twelve years ago, when I left the corporate world, are still alive and well!

Things such as:

-The preference to stick to doing things the way they’ve always been done.

-Being unwilling to adopt new ideas.

-Thinking that other people’s jobs are way easier than their own.

-Forgetting that attitude and focus are tied to success.

Yup! People are still people.

Perhaps sub-consciously due to the upcoming Super Bowl, I made the comment that people need to play the game they are in. Not one from last week or next week, but the one in front of them.

This idea punted around my brain and it’s actually an intriguing analogy for how we choose to focus. Although, I never seek to watch football by myself, I do enjoy the team spirit and social interaction with my husband and our friends.

We may learn from last week’s game, and plan for next week’s game, yet we must PLAY in this week’s game—the game scheduled for today. If we spend all our energy focused on the past or the future, then our present is going to suffer.

Options.

Previous game. We can wallow in our losses, re-live our mistakes, give up on our dreams. Instead consider: What lesson can we take away from what happened? What worked well and not well? Reflecting is good for improvement and learning.

Future game. We may become overwhelmed by what might and might not happen with unpredictable circumstances. Instead consider: What specifically are we striving to improve next time? What will we do differently? Planning is good for setting goals and figuring out how to get there.

But, most importantly, what can we do in our current game?

Today’s game.

  • Improve our kicking game by honing our skill set. Being off trajectory even a little can make or break our results.

  • Advance our running game by taking incremental steps. Consistency and perseverance makes all the difference in achieving our objectives.

  • Boost our passing game by progressing our forward motion. Choosing to take both small and large risks can increase our chances for attaining our desired outcome.

  • Celebrate our touchdowns! Patting ourselves on the back motivates us to keep going.

Ensure YOUR head is in the right game at the right time.

Maybe next year we can talk defense. Ha ha!

Happy Super Bowl or Commercial watching. Or doing whatever makes you smile.
