The Honor of Friendship

Friendship has been on my mind lately for two reasons.

First, not only have I had the opportunity recently to spend some quality time with old friends from Arizona and California, but have also developed new friendships in Texas. Second, this summer I wrote and began pre-production on a short comedy film, called To Life, that revolves around four long-time female friends.

So in light of all this, I assembled a simple acronym to capture some of my thoughts about friends!

F - Fondness. In short - they like you! They care about what happens to you, your aspirations, your family, your challenges, your successes. No matter what, they are there, steadfast and reachable. You share a strong bond.

R - Respectful. Anger and grudges don’t last. They treat you right, are forgiving and apologetic when needed.

I - Idiosyncratic. Being different is okay. Friends come in all shapes, sizes, colors, political affiliations, personalities, etc., etc. There is something heart-warming knowing we don’t have to agree on everything or be exactly the same.

E - Entertaining. You share a good sense of humor. Craziness, zaniness and laughter until your cheeks hurt. Of course there can be tears as well, but they always have a smile for you when needed.

N - Non-judgmental. They see the best in you even when you don’t see it in yourself. They are good listeners, honest in their challenges, supportive and accepting.

D - Dependable. You can trust them. They are dedicated and committed to you and they don’t reveal your secrets.

S - Separation. Neither distance nor time matters because all is eradicated when you reunite and it's like you were with them just yesterday.

What an honor to wrap our arms around the individuals that share life with us. To console, to celebrate and to communicate how much we love and appreciate them.

If you are blessed with many good friends, remember that not everyone enjoys that blessing. So reach out to those around you and be a friend today. You may be glad you did!
